It is known that acne is a chronic disease in which periods of exacerbation and remission replace each other. Studies have shown that the number of microcomedones decreases during the use of products and increases after their cancellation. This suggests that it is advisable to use care products for acne constantly: during an exacerbation to put the disease into remission, and in remission to reduce the likelihood of a second exacerbation. What products should be used during an exacerbation and what products should be used during remission?
Retinoids are one of the most commonly prescribed medications for acne. Retinoids are derivatives of retinol or vitamin A. The effectiveness of retinoids has been proven by numerous studies, so they are included in acne treatment protocols. At the same time, retinoids are multifaceted substances. They have a number of positive effects, one of which is maintaining youthful skin. Therefore, they are also used in anti-ageing cosmetics. At the beginning of using retinoids, you may experience dryness or irritation of the skin, which disappears as the skin adapts to their effects. Dermatologists and cosmetologists widely use such retinoids as tretinoin and adapalene in their practice.
Tretinoin is a representative of the first generation of retinoids. It binds to more receptors on the skin than adapalene. It is quite potent, sometimes causing dryness or irritation of the skin to a greater extent. Among the retinoids, tretinoin is considered the gold standard for anti-ageing cosmetics.
Adapalene is a representative of the third generation of retinoids. It binds to fewer receptors, has a milder effect than tretinoin, causes fewer side effects, and is quite effective.
Dermatologists and cosmetologists select products individually, based on the patient's condition and medical history. One of the acne treatment regimens may include the use of adapalene during acne exacerbation and tretinoin during remission. Thus, during an acute exacerbation, effective control of acne manifestations will be achieved, and the skin will gradually get used to the effects of retinoids. During remission, when the skin has already adapted to retinoids, you can switch to tretinoin - it will maintain remission, and an additional bonus will be its ability to maintain youthful skin.
